As a parent, I feel that it is vitally important that I stay informed about the ways in which I can positively influence my child's development. There are so many conflicting arguments about nature versus nurtue, it is hard to know what we are supposed to do. The way I see it, it must be a combination of genes and environment that influence a child's development. The degree to which each is influential is uncertain, but to be safe, I want to make sure that I make every effort to provide a positive environment for my children.

In no area is providing a good environment more important than infant development. As a firs time parent, it is hard to figure out exactly what toys are suitable for your precious infant. You can never be too cautious when dealing with a newborn child and it is normal for parents to be apprehensive about any toys they buy for their infant. A good rule of thumb is to immediately exclude any infant toys with parts small enough or nearly small enough to be swallowed in order to prevent the risk of choking.

Another good idea is to avoid furry dolls with long hairs, as infants tend put anything and everything in their mouths, and the hairs can get caught in their throat and cause discomfort or even present a choking hazard. Good, solid toys made of plastic or rubber are great for teething infants. Make sure to read the packaging on any toys you consider for your baby and take note of any potential hazards. If you follow these simple rules, your baby should be safe and happy.

My Favorite Infant Halloween Costumes

With Halloween a little over a month in the past, I realized that I had neglected to post a blog about my favorite infant Halloween costumes this year. I saw a few really good ones, and would like to share them with my readers so that maybe you can use one of these ideas next year.

My number one favorite costume this year was an adorable little baby in the cutest monkey outfit I have ever seen. Generally, adults look clownish in gorilla suits on Halloween as far as I’m concerned, but this little baby stole my heart.

The second best costume that I saw this year was a baby dressed up as a little peanut. He was tiny to begin with that I thought the costume choice was really appropriate.
